VERIFIABLE TRUTH: SUSAN BOYLE, MEMORY

Most news are not verifiable. Important news are overlooked, such as the perfect landing of Atlantis, gone unnoticed by the main Italian online newspapers. I always say that to know something one has to be there, and even then, one's perception is not communicable because it's tainted by one's subjectivity.

Here is a truth I verified a few minutes ago on our main prime time TV newscast: I love Susan Boyle's voice. (And, she's Scottish.) It was not so obvious. When I heard her the first time a few months ago, I liked her at once: but I was a bit perplexed by the "phenomenon". OK, I get the message: anybody can make it. But:

According to what sexist, superficial canon should she be an "anybody" who is saved only by her voice? I thought she was funny, energetic and a wonderful singer. I would not even have noticed her looks, if they had not pointed it out so much and if they had not sent her on the stage without the usual grooming one gets when appearing on TV (as in the above video). It's as though they "built" her persona by deliberately trying to downplay her.

Thankfully, I think her real essence shines through. And hearing her singing one of my favourite songs gives me goosebumps. It's a frightfully difficult song because of the range it requires. She's not perfect and she could use some coaching, in diction too, but when she hits the "Touch me" her happiness turns into beauty, as is the theme of the song.

I hope I've managed to communicate at least a little of the truth of my experience and of Susan's voice...
