(forse... mai!) | Once again, my almost-literal notes taken while I was watching the ep. I only corrected and extended them a little, and concentrated the various storylines for easier understanding. 3.22 Through the Looking Glass JACK'S HAREBRAINED PLAN, BEN'S... WHATEVER Kate-Jack-Sawyer, the other side of the Quadrangle from Hell. As the Losties leave the beach, a feeling of farewell, of exodus. Great direction. And here I was writing the word "exodus", and Naomi called Jack Moses! Now that I think about it, did Des ever ask Naomi about Penny or how she knows him? And also Danielle knows a lot of things nobody even asked her... I understand this is one of the most annoying things of this show for most people, me included. Night ambush, very dramatic. Funny that the one who misses is the supposed Korean mafia hit man. I just knew I would try to shoot the guy holding Jin... and Sayid did try! The Losties hear only 2 explosions. Kate, shut up, what the hell's the use of saying "it didn't work"? Even Jack says that if their friends are with Sayid they are safe. He's all reassuring, which probably is the reason of his charisma, but how can they be reassured when he's such a nutjob? (Sorry! I'm trying not to be hard on him, but boy!!) Others' Camp. Which temple is Ben talking about? (Read somewhere it's the place with the four-fingered statue.) And is that a volcano on the map? Losties. You tell her, Sawyer! Kate, are you sociopathic or just badly written? I can't even begin to list all that is wrong with your little speech to Sawyer. Go with Jack, you deserve to die of boredom together. Then Sawyer acts noble, and Kate, of course, does not understand. Agh, the Quadrangle from Hell! And Kate has to be SPELLED the situation from Jack. "Because I love you?" OH. At last. But I still like more my Opti/Elita "I love you whoever you are." Sawyer and Juliet. "Who blah blah?" (forgot what he asked) "Aliens." "You sleeping with Jack?" "And you?" ROFL!! But please, don't pair these two, save Sawyer's sanity! (Wait, it is a hint of slash in the future?...) Nice that Sawyer calls Hurley "Hugo". He's really growing up... one way or the other. Other's camp. Ben to Alex: "Didn't want you to get pregnant." Almost makes sense from a father to a daughter, knowing that pregnant women die. Ben could have just killed Carl. I just can't place these Others but this is what makes them interesting to me. "Amoral" still describes them best. Oh, hello, dying Locke. Oh goodness, not Walt? Recognized him from up back and behind, even though the dubbed voice sounded like a woman's. Then again, Walt always had a connection with the Island. Makes sense it's him=the Island saving Locke, as I predicted last time. Great showdown. Ben and Alex meet up with the Losties. Family Reunion! Ben and Danielle are such a lovely couple! "Help me tie him" - hee. Then (or before - I can't remember) she casually knocks him out with an elbow. ROFL!!! Would like to see them when they were together, and maybe I will. (Or maybe Alex was born in a test tube.) But wait, why didn't Danielle die when she was pregnant?... I think we should go back and listen more carefully to her mayday message... Ben-Jack's clash of wills. Hey, did they kill the guys? I bet not, or it wouldn't have been offscreen. Pretty stupid on Ben's part, with a psychotic doctor. Pretty stupid on Jack's part not to KILL him, since he's shown he has no qualms about blowing up people! Or is it only when someone else does it? Ha, our guys are still alive, I knew it. And they are saved by... Hurley and his truck! For a moment it looked just like "Chamber of Secrets" when Ron's car saves him and Harry: it's even the same colour! Whoa, Sawyer! Killing Tom/Zeke was... radical. You're getting more human and more ruthless after you killed Locke's dad. I sort of like it - at least it's an evolution. Pity for Tom/Zeke, he looked like a decent Other and contributed to the Others' ambiguity. Now please, someone use the damn radio and tell Jack that... oh, Hurley, I love you. So let's sum up this part. Naomi was lying about Penny's boat coming to save them (as Charlie discovers, see below). So Ben was telling the truth at least on this. So Locke was justified in killing Naomi. So Jack was wrong in believing Naomi and not Locke and Ben, making the call and asking to be rescued. Intriguing!! CHARLIE/DES Within Looking Glass Station, Charlie is treated without gloves. Are we seeing the Others as they really are, that is evil? But then we discover the 2 female Others are a "splinter cell" under Ben's direct orders. Ben admits he made a "mess". Ben discovers Juliet defected... Or did she? For now it seems she did. Charlie, great acting! "Then I die." Des arrives! Great trick, Charlie. Singing Driveshaft. I can tell why people 'ship you and Des! And Mikhail being called "Polyphemus", another piece of Odissey! I knew he was interesting. For a moment here it seems he'll save our guys but... Polyphemus was a BAD guy?... And in fact Des shoots him with the spear gun after he's killed the women. Ouch. The fateful yellow button-console. Programmed by a musician? Who? Ok, when Des suggested to take the Scuba gear I would have put it on FIRST, and THEN gone for the button. And in fact, here comes Polyphemus being a bad guy. BOOM. Wow, what an ending. I knew this part, but until the last moment I thought Charlie was taking breaths to swim through the porthole. Hand against hand... Des and him are SO totally slashable. Love that Charlie crosses himself just like Des did before turning the key that imploded What's-its-name Station. They are soulmates! JACK'S FLASHBACK (huh) Jack with a BEARD! Improved, makes his flashes less boring. And drinking? What is he reading in the newspaper? Somebody died. Who is he calling? He attempts suicide. Then causes an accident, just like him. Jack lies to Sarah: he WAS drunk. Sarah is pregnant? Did she have after all an affair with Christian, contrary to what I believed? Is she carrying Jack's brother? Oh my. Jack crosses a road as though he didn't care for his life, or as though he was Desmond and saw the future. Coffin? Someone nobody loved? (It's not Jack because he's there... Ok, bad joke). Not a friend, not family, but Jack is bereaved? And pops pills? I'd go for Kate. If he's in love with her he's technically not a friend. Or it's wishful thinking on my part. I think I'll go on wondering who it is and making guesses until I see the new series on Italian TV. This time I won't spoil myself. Ha, so Jack did cause the accident. Why are we supposed to care long-term for such a constant loser? Sigh. Oh crap, Kate is still alive. I think we were meant to believe it was her in the coffin. Wait, so it's not the past. It's the future. But alas, I already knew, because I had spoiled myself about this too. Jack is always slightly abusive in invading her personal space, even though Kate is clearly in a relationship. (With Sawyer? Poor man.) Great ending: "We have to go back", and the plane flying above. MY FINAL THOUGHTS I had this strange connection with this ep, the feeling I knew what was going to happen (even when I was not spoiled), but in a good way, not because it was predictable but because it was mostly in tune with what I would have done or liked to happen, which has been a rare feeling in the first half of this season. I've also thought that transmissions, messages, in general communications are a theme of the series. Another is redemption. I can identify with this, and I hope the writing stays at this level. Then a very important character is coming into her/his/its own: the Island/Walt/Jacob. Who the Others are has got both clearer and murkier, but they are in touch with the Island. Despite the tantalizing hints, it seems my theory that they are all already dead is wrong, since Jack and Kate are clearly alive in the future. I'm sorry about Charlie - especially after I've got him so often in my test results! - but hey, the Island can save him, right? It did already when he was hanged... Anyway, I'll look forward to a Season 4 with flash-forwards instead of flash-backs; I guess the whole purpose of the season will be to show how Jack and Kate got into that situation and who is in the coffin. Maybe Season 5 will pick up again from Jack and Kate trying to go back. Anyway, I'm a little tiny bit reassured that JJ Abrams knows where he's going. |
